11/21/2013 -- Four gang members charged in decade-old murder

"A man, who federal officials say brought the Two Six Nation street gang to Northwest Indiana, is facing charges claiming he ordered an East Chicago man killed 10 years ago.

U.S. Attorney David Capp announced Thursday that Jesus Valentin Fuentes, 39, who has connections to East Chicago and Chicago, was charged by a federal grand jury with one count each of murder in aid of racketeering activity and using a gun during a gun trafficking crime."

11/21/2013 -- Fardon targets street crime, terrorism, corruption 

"New U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon said Wednesday that the senseless slaughter of children caught in Chicago's gang crossfire keeps him up at night and that the level of mayhem is an "unacceptable status quo" that has to change.

In his first interview since assuming the powerful law enforcement post last month, Fardon, though, sought to tamp down mounting expectations over his role in tackling the city's seemingly intractable problem of gangs and guns — a crisis that he said has myriad root causes to blame."

11/20/2013 -- 3 gang members charged with murdering rival, then returning to party

"Three members of the Satan Disciples street gang are charged with chasing a rival gang member from a house party and killing him in the front yard of a West Chicago home before heading back to the party for more celebration.

'If that’s not cold-blooded, I don’t know what is,' DuPage County Assistant State’s Attorney Tim Diamond said of the weekend slaying during a bond hearing Wednesday."

11/18/2013 -- Weekend of gangland violence grips Chicago as 18 are shot and injured including a boy, 15, and girl, 16

"A weekend of violence has seen 18 people shot in Chicago, including a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl.

A total of 15 shootings happened between Saturday night and Sunday morning, with two happening earlier on Saturday and another on Friday.

So far no arrests have been made in connection with any of the attacks, many of which are thought to be gang related."

11/08/2013 -- Latin Kings leader sentenced to 23 years in prison

"U.S. District Judge Rudy Lozano admitted the task before him Thursday was difficult.

He was sentencing Latin Kings leader Alexander Vargas, who had ordered two murders and been involved in drug trafficking, while taking into account his cooperation with the government, which aided in the conviction and guilty pleas of several other gang members."

11/05/2013 -- No bond for lookout in Pilsen double murder

"A man accused of acting as a lookout last year while his brother gunned down two men enjoying late-night tacos on a Pilsen porch was denied bond on Monday.

Mario Gutierrez, 28, who prosecutors say is an Ambrose Street gang member, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Esteban Alvarez and Alejandro Munoz."

11/02/2013 -- Federal Charges Brought Against Eight Accused of Dealing Narcotics in Chicago

"A federal investigation targeting narcotics trafficking on the west and south sides of Chicago has resulted in charges against eight alleged members of the Black Disciples street gang. The charges are contained in eight separate criminal complaints filed earlier this week in United States District Court in Chicago and unsealed following the arrests of six of the defendants. The charges were announced by Robert J Shields, Jr., Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Zachary T. Fardon, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. Each of the defendants faces one count of distribution of a controlled substance, either cocaine or heroin."

10/26/2013 -- Pressure on new U.S. attorney to deal with violent crime

"For months leading up to Zachary Fardon's ascension to the U.S. attorney's post in Chicago, the pressure has mounted over what his role would be in tackling the city's crisis of gang violence.

Sen. Dick Durbin has minced no words demanding violent crime be Fardon's top priority. Durbin's counterpart, Sen. Mark Kirk, famously suggested the mass roundup of more than 18,000 Gangster Disciples would be a good start."

10/23/2013 -- 29 Students Arrested After Julian High School Fight

"Chicago Police arrested 29 students following a fight at Percy L. Julian High School Tuesday.

Students tell NBC 5 Chicago that the disturbance was gang-related and was initially provoked by a comments somebody made in the hallway on the second floor."

10/23/2013 -- Year later, shooting at gang funeral claims second victim

"A shooting at a gang funeral on the South Side last year has claimed a second victim.

Deonte Ousley, 27, died Wednesday, almost a year after he and another man were shot outside St. Columbanus Church, where a funeral was being held for a gang member killed a week earlier, according to police.
