10/23/2013 -- Holland Latin King leader set for sentencing in federal court in Grand Rapids

"Mario Herrera, one of the founding Holland Latin Kings, is to be sentenced on Tuesday, Oct. 22, in U.S. District Court.

Herrera, Desidario Amara and Eric Ruibal were the three regional leaders overseeing the two Holland Latin Kings chapters.

Amaro , who cooperated early on, was sentenced to 33 months in prison for racketeering. Ruibal, considered the top Holland Latin King, awaits trial."

10/19/2013 -- Two charged in gang-related South Side killing

"Two teenagers have been charged in what prosecutors said Saturday was a gang-related killing last month on the South Side.

Anthony Wells, 18, and Omar Gunn, 17, were identified by witnesses who saw them take off their hoodies and take out a gun after the Sept. 13 shooting, Cook County prosecutors said."

10/17/2013 -- Chicago Drops CeaseFire from Anti-Violence Strategy

"The city of Chicago has cut funding for a model anti-violence program, deciding to focus instead on community policing and other strategies to combat the city’s high murder rate.

The program, CeaseFire, sends former gang members into targeted neighborhoods to defuse conflicts before they erupt into violence. FRONTLINE featured some of the CeaseFire operators earlier this year in The Interrupters, tracking their efforts to intervene in gang violence, stopping revenge shootings and curbing fights."

10/16/2013 -- Rep. Reboletti: Task Force Examines Gang Violence in Illinois

"The Illinois Gang Violence Task Force, co-chaired by State Representative Dennis Reboletti (R-Elmhurst), was joined by Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy on Tuesday to discuss a range of proposals to reduce gang violence in Chicago and throughout the state.

Superintendent McCarthy testified on various topics related to gang violence, specifically advocating for H.B. 2265 that aims to increase minimum sentencing for the most serious gun crimes including a requirement that offenders serve at least 85% of their sentence. McCarthy noted that this legislation would have prevented 108 shootings in the City of Chicago to date."

10/14/2013 -- Cities Use Sticks, Carrots to Reign In Gangs

"Police in some cities are trying a two-pronged approach to tackle high homicide rates: community pressure to shame gang members and analytics software to help arrest the ones who continue to offend.

In the first step of a policing method known as Ceasefire, young people with prior gang-related charges are brought into meetings, known as call-ins, where police, district and federal prosecutors, social workers and community members show them the harm their violence has caused. The offenders are offered social services, such as career counseling and anger management, and warned of tough punishment if the violence persists."

"Harold 'Noonie' Ward, a former high-ranking member of the Gangster Disciples, one of America’s largest street gangs, claims the deadly violence that is plaguing Rahm Emanuel’s “world class city” of Chicago is because Mexican drug cartels are being
