On July 9, 2005 Muaz Haffar and another defendant allegedly instigated an altercation that led to the fatal beating of a University of Illinois at Chicago student. Witnesses to the attack reported that Haffar beat the victim with a metal bike lock and continued the vicious attack past the point of consciousness. The victim died after suffering more than thirty separate injuries, including six skull fractures.
