01/07/2015 -- Mexican drug lord 'Barbie' pleads guilty in US court

"Valdez, a US citizen better known as "Barbie" for his light eyes, was arrested in Mexico in 2010 and extradited to the US in September 2015.

A key figure in the Beltran Leyva cartel, he was accused of smuggling more than 1,000kg (2,200lb) of cocaine into the southern and eastern US."

01/04/2016 -- Mayor Gisela Mota Assassinated Her First Day in Office in Mexico

"Mayor Gisela Mota was assassinated in Mexico less than a day after taking office in Temixco.

Mota, 33, who won election for mayor in June, took office on New Year's Day, said Mexico News Daily, before four gunmen barged into her home, firing on the occupants.

Two of the gunmen were killed and two others were arrested after Mota's bodyguards gave chase."

01/02/2016 -- Mexican Drug Cartels are Affected by US Marijuana Legalization

As more and more states are starting to accept marijuana at least in a medicinal capacity, it would seem that the cartels that usually make profits from selling marijuana over the border are having some serious monetary issues.

As recently as 2008, over two thirds of the marijuana used nationwide throughout the United States came from over the border. Now, with some states approving cannabis for recreational use, and others for medical use, that quantity has reduced to one third."

01/01/2016 -- Two marines hunting for fugitive drug lord 'El Chapo' Guzman killed in firefight with 'gang members' in Mexico

"Two Mexican marines were shot dead as they hunted down fugitive drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman in Mexico's notorious Sinaloa state this week.

They were on patrol in El Ebano village on Monday night when they were attacked by by 'suspected members of organised crime', the Mexican navy said in a statement."
